Varanasi also known as Benares, Banaras or Kashi is a city on the banks of the river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, India.This is one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities, and one of the holiest in Hinduism.Kashi (a name popular with Hindu pilgrims for the city of Varanasi) is one of the holiest cities and centres of pilgrimage for Hindus of all denominations.It is one of the seven holiest cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism, and is considered by the faith as the giver of salvation (moksha). Over 50 thousand Brahmins live in Kashi, providing religious services to the masses. Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganges remits sins and that dying in Kashi ensures release of a person’s soul from the cycle of its transmigration. Thus, many Hindus come here to die. Varanasi is famous for its ghats. The city has 88 Ghats.Ghats in Varanasi are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the River Ganges.Many ghats are associated with legends or mythologies.Assi Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, Panchganga Ghat and Adi Keshav Ghat and Harish Chandra Ghat are famous for religious perspective.
